Pre and Post Joint Replacement?

When manual therapy isn't enough and hip or knee replacement surgery is the only option left, there are ways to help with the preparation in the lead up before surgery, and during the post surgery recovery.

The pain before surgery has most likely stopped you from enjoying normal everyday activities like walking or getting up out of a chair, and your muscles will have become weaker. You will also have developed compensatory walking patterns to avoid putting weight on the joint and this can result in pain in the lower back. Sleep can also be a problem as it is hard to find a comfortable position.

What are the common issues?

How can Keystone help?

At Keystone Chiropractic & Yoga, our chiropractors take a holistic approach to help prepare you for surgery, and cope with the recovery following surgery and through rehabilitation. There are many issues that can occur following surgery as your body adapts to the new joint and it is important to make sure your treatment assesses these issues.

In the lead up to surgery you will have formed many compensatory loading patterns to avoid using the painful joint and these will need to be corrected. Your appointment will include a physical examination to assess both the underlying problem and the compensatory stresses and strains this has caused. For any treatment to be effective both the cause and compensatory issues need to be addressed. We will work with you to provide a personalised treatment plan to help you get back to doing all the things you love.

Your treatment will be aimed to maintain balance and mobility to your body. It will include a combination of soft tissue releases and mobilisations, gentle chiropractic adjustments (where appropriate), and exercises and stretches to strengthen and support your new joint and the compensatory loadings.

We also have yoga and tai chi classes which can be adapted to assist with your surgery preparation and recovery.
